Humboldt MEMS vs Frankfurt GSEFM Economics (english)

Hello,

I'm writing in English. I'm sorry but i think it's better than translating it with google.
I'm an international student majored in math and i hoped to study economics in germany / german univerisities.
For I have no inside information of german universities and i've been only in Humboldt university before (during exchange program), all I could do was to look into the newspapers' uni rankings and to select several schools sounding famous. Of course I checked their webpages to get more impressions.

I applied for Bonn, Mannheim, Humboldt Berlin, Frankfurt, etc, and I got admission from HU MEMS master in economics and management and Frankfurt GSEFM phd+mqe in economics. Still waiting for other unis though.
Since I have no general info about german schools other than the international rankings, I applied for as many schools as I managed to and now I'm having hard times deciding which school to go. If you are studying inside one of these programs or you're doing master or doctoral in economics at other german schools, so that you could give me some advices, it will help me a lot.

Looking into the school's webpage and threads in many forums, I got an impression that Frankfurt has strength in Macro and Finance and also that the job placement has been successful in macro and finance areas. (Also, i wrote to one of faculty members there and she replied that it is indeed, but she didn't say about micro.) However, since my major interests are in Micro theory, applied micro, game thy and so on, and I also want to study other social sciences and humanities together with economics hoping that would be interesting academic connection, I wonder if the school fits well with my characteristics.
How is it to study micro in Frankfurt? Is it also strong in micro or would it be a bad idea to study micro there?

About humboldt university, i got accepted into MEMS master program. It is master's program in economics and management sci, but i think i can focus on economics rather than managementby my choice. I tried to get some more information about the school, program, but was not successful. There is no information like job placement (though it's not really decisive for me, i think it can be some criterion to compare schools.) on the webpage and also I could not find threads giving me meaningful information. How is micro at humboldt university in general? It's really hard to get an idea what the program is like. There is hardly a thread about it and also hard to know the placement. I heard that HU is really good in Philo, humanities, maybe in social sci's, so if the program is good in micro, maybe it is better for me. How is it to study Economics in Berlin in general? The city's touristic attractions don't matter with me. BDPEMS, DIW, are they good in general?(in micro?)

I also know that people successfully graduated HU or FU masters go to BDPEMS to pursue doctoral. How is the institute? Is it also really good as GSEFM frankfurt? How is it to study micro in Berlin in general?

So many questions. Thank you for reading this and I hope you guys could help me a bit.
I'm sorry again that my english thread is invading german forum, but i hope you guys studyin in germany could give me some valuable advices and I'll start learning german soon.
Thank you!! ?

Re: Humboldt MEMS vs Frankfurt GSEFM Economics (english)

Hi,

Finally someone interested in MEMS :) I'm an Bachelor of Economics graduate from the Goethe University Frankfurt and I was also accepted into the MEMS program.

According to your description you seem to be quite interested in research and so a fast track PhD program like the one from Frankfurt GSFE might better fit your preferences than MEMS. There is also a fast track for MEMS but the deadline is closed already.
The advantage of MEMS is that you can blend in some courses from social sciences and humanities but you can only take at maximum 10 credits though.

Regarding your focus on microeconomics, traditionally Bonn has a very strong focus in this field. Reinhard Selten received a Nobel prize for his research on game theroy. Bonn might be the best university if you like to do research in this area.

In general, the schools that you applied to are all well-respected schools in the field of economics so you don't close any doors here on the master's level.

Could you give a detailed reason for that please? What do you think of Micro there?

Thank you!
Yes, you are right about that I'm quite interested in research, academic career. So, doing master and doctoral in sequance at Frankfurt GSEFM would be great, however since the school looks strong in Macro and Finance and proud of it, I became not sure about going there.
If I go to Berlin, my plan is that I apply for BDPEMS next year doing my master at MEMS, and ask if I can start the BDPEMS program from the second year. I just mailed to the managing director of BDPEMS now about this and I hope I can. I'm being little bit more attracted by Humboldt due to its history and strength in Humanities and Social Sciences, but being very careful before decision not to miss anything.
Thank you again for helping me! :D

Would you mind posting the profile you applied with? I personally also would go for Berlin due to better research output in micro when conpared to Frankfurt

Frankfurt ist no 1 in Germany for Macro, Bonn is no 1 for Micro.
But all of the following universities are quite strong in economics and cover all areas: Goethe-University Frankfurt, LMU München, Uni Mannheim, Uni Bonn, Uni Köln, HU Berlin, FU Berlin.

Thank you for the comment!

Hi!
I don't know anything about Master's in Econ, Master's in Business and so on. I only applied for MEMS, for it requires no German language.

MEMS requires applicants to have 100+ in TOEFL ibt, and GRE general scores. there is some statistics about GRE scores of the intake students on their webpage. Mine is a little bit above the last year's average. Verbal score is awful.. but I think they care only quant and analytic.

I majored Math in Sci&Tech uni and the overall grade is about 1.7 in German scale. I believe that two professors wrote letters really nicely for me. Since they don't limit the applicants with the undergrad major and it seems that they want some variety or different characters in the students pool, I think anyone outside from Economics can apply for it as long as s/he has some background in Economics.
I'm not sure about how they matter, but talking about CV and letter, I think I wrote my personal statement very truthfully. I just wrote about experiences and my personal lessons, the reasons why I decided to study econ from those experiences. I didn't do any internship or personal academic research work, but I studied various areas including math, econ of course and also computer sci(3-4 programming courses) and also humanities. I wrote about my programming skills in my CV. Also, one semester abroad in Germany.

I met 2016 intaker last year and remember some of his profile. He majored econ and the grade was 1.3~1.4 in german grade. Several international background; studying english in UK or US(not sure which country now), helping international students of his uni(sth like program by the int office). He wrote his bachelor paper(I'm not sure if it's thesis or not. 10-15 pages), but only the title was written on the CV so I don't knwo how it matters.

Hope it is helpful!

Hi! :)
I have applied for the MEMS Program and wanted to ask you, which program you had chosen (MEMS or GSEFM)?
Also, when did the MEMS send you a decision document?
